The Fourth Estate of India lags far behind the economic development of the country.  They are so far behind in time and have hardly come out of the Cold War era assuming they have come out of the colonial era.  Sometimes, it is hard to believe that they represent free India.  They allow all kinds of unjust comments of writers from other parts of the world and does not write the failures of those countries, giving the impression only Indian democracy is in shambles.  This needs to change if India has to play its role as and when it is allowed to be a permanent member of the Security Council (SC).  So it is time that they invest money in training their reporters to deal with situations that will project India with backbone to the nations of the world.  Till this happens it is not a good idea for India to assume this leadership role in the SC.  They have to be trained in reporting of economic, political, religious and sociological incidences in a manner that will build the image of the country among the nations while pointing out the shortcomings of the government.  That does not mean that the news has to be distorted to suit the government.  But the perception of the reporters have to take into account the larger picture and study how things are reported in countries with permanent member ship of the SC.
It must be made compulsory for all those involved to have a good background study or work in Sociology and International relations along with some level of understanding of the subject they report about.
If the Forth Estate of India thinks that they are the cleanest lot in India while all those who are in Politics, Government, Industry, Judiciary, etc., all are corrupt they need to examine whether this is really possible.  In the recent episode of a journalist arrested for leaking government documents for private industry, most of the journalists, except one, Karan Taper, were trying to air their opinion that a journalist of India can not be doing what the investigating agency was claiming at all.  Nothing can be far from truth.  If the journalists believe to be true that a lot of the politicians, government servants and judiciary in India are biased, inept, corrupt and ape either the non-existent communist ideology, religious bigotry of other countries then it stands to reason that a lot of those who are part of the fourth estate would also have those failings since they come from the same lot of people who become politicians, government servants, judges etc.
This has been time and again brought to the notice of public during discussions in the media that in towns of India, journalists write things that help them to gain material things.
If we assume that a lot of the journalists have also do biased, inept reporting and share sometimes news for material gains then we need to do to things.  First to assess all the short comings of the journalists and media.  Secondly we need to see to whom these people are responsible and whether there is any mechanism is in place to check them and bring them to mainstream.
I will be happy to see comments on this blog about the control structure of the journalists and media in order to analyse further.  If someone tells me that in India, we have only bad politicians, government servants, judges, industrialists and there is nothing wrong with the journalists and the media, I am not going to believe it and we need to take a hard look and see how much the fourth estate of India needs to change and how the public can contribute in this effort.
